Michael MacCambridge: Chuck Noll: His Life's Work

Chuck Noll: His Life's Work

Description

Chuck Noll won four Super Bowls and presided over one of the greatest football dynasties in history, the Pittsburgh Steelers of the '70s. Later inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, his achievements as a competitor and a coach are the stuff of legend. But Nollalways remained an intensely private and introspective man, never revealing much of himself as a person or as a coach, not even to the players and fans who revered him. Chuck Noll did not need a dramatic public profile to be the catalyst for one of the greatest transformations in sports history. In the nearly four decades before he was hired, the Pittsburgh Steelers were the least successful team in professional football, never winning so much as a division title. After Noll's arrival, his quiet but steely leadership quickly remolded the team into the most accomplished in the history of professional football. And what he built endured well beyond his time with the Steelers-who have remained one of America's great NFL teams, accumulating a total of six Super Bowls, eight AFC championships, and dozens of division titles and playoff berths. In this penetrating biography, based on deep research and hundreds of interviews, Michael MacCambridge takes the measure of the man, painting an intimate portrait of one of the most important figures in American football history. He traces Noll's journey from a Depression-era childhood in Cleveland, where he first played the game in a fully integrated neighborhood league led by an African-American coach and then seriously pursued the sport through high school and college. Eventually, Noll played both defensive and offensive positions professionally for the Browns, before discovering that his true calling was coaching. MacCambridge reveals that Noll secretly struggled with and overcame epilepsy to build the career that earned him his place as "the Emperor" of Pittsburgh during the Steelers' dynastic run in the 1970s, while in his final years, he battled Alzheimer's in the shelter of his caring and protective family. Noll's impact went well beyond one football team. When he arrived, the city of steel was facing a deep crisis, as the dramatic decline of Pittsburgh's lifeblood industry traumatized an entire generation. "Losing," Noll said on his first day on the job, "has nothing to do with geography." Through his calm, confident leadership of the Steelers and the success they achieved, the people of Pittsburgh came to believe that winning was possible, and their recovery of confidence owed a lot to the Steeler's new coach. The famous urban renaissance that followed can only be understood by grasping what Noll and his team meant to the people of the city. The man Pittsburghers could never fully know helped them see themselves better. Chuck Noll: His Life's Work tells the story of a private man in a very public job. It explores the family ties that built his character, the challenges that defined his course, and the love story that shaped his life. By understanding the man himself, we can at last clearly see Noll's profound influence on the city, players, coaches, and game he loved. They are all, in a real sense, heirs to the football team Chuck Noll built.

Randall Rhoads, born in California in 1956 and cut down in his prime at the age of only 26, has been an immense influence on a whole generation of musicians in rock and metal. He first came to international prominence in 1979, when he was recruited from the cult metal band Quiet Riot to play with Ozzy Osbourne, who had been fired from Black Sabbath for his drink and drug addictions and was in urgent need of a co-writer to kickstart a solo career. How and why Chuck Noll: His Life's Work download ebook pdf Ozzy and Randy went on to find enormous success is one of the key themes of "Crazy Train", named after the first and most famous Osbourne/Rhoads co-composition. It was Randy's pioneering combination of neo-classical soloing, catchy riffage and unforgettable songwriting which propelled Ozzy to stardom in his own right - even after thousands of Black Sabbath fans had written him off. The two albums which Randy recorded with Quiet Riot and the two with Ozzy showcase the young guitarist's immense ability, although the full extent of his talent may never have been revealed. In 1982 he died in an air crash, the victim of the pilot's cocaine-influenced misjudgment.

Description

Son of a Leicestershire weaver, Fox was a mystic, visionary and fearless evangelist. He became a leader among the Seekers, who sought a personal relationship with God, and longed to see his Kingdom established on earth. As they called on all people to tremble before God, their enemies labelled them Quakers. Within years, they became one of England's largest radical sects, striking fear into the established order. Savagely beaten, their meeting-houses demolished, thousands were flung into England's lice-ridden gaols. Fox was imprisoned eight times. Though broken in health, he travelled relentlessly through Britain and North America. In 1689, two years before his death, the Toleration Act passed into English law. It laid the basis for the freedoms we enjoy today.

Susan C. Pinsky: Organizing Solutions for People with ADHD

Organizing Solutions for People with ADHD

Description

If you're one of the 10 million American adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), every day is a struggle to keep your home, your office, your electronics, and your calendar organized. Organizing Solutions for People with ADHD, 2nd Edition presents a simple but effective, long-term solution to get you back in control of your life. Written by professional organizer Susan Pinsky, this book outlines a practical, ADHD-friendly organizing approach that emphasizes easy maintenance techniques and methods for maximum efficiency, catering to the specific needs of the ADHD population. Color photos, useful tips, and bulleted lists make this a quick and manageable read, no matter how fleeting your attention span. Armed with this unique, step-by-step approach to organizing, you'll receive the tools and the knowledge you need to eliminate stress from your home and lead a happier, healthier, more organized life.

With his characteristically very personal anecdotal style, Charles Handy analyses how materialistic capitalism is self-limiting, how efficiency may be the enemy of a cohesive society, and examines the false certainties of science and religion. Offering a carefully considered and compelling alternative vision, the book challenges the status quo on everything from capitalism and organization to goal-setting and morality. With nods to Kant, Keynes, Sartre and Drucker, The Hungry Spirit is not your usual business tome, but that, of course, is part of Handy's plan. This new expanded edition includes new and built works updated since The Definitive Guide to Point and Figure: A Comprehensive Guide to the Theory and Practical Use of the Point and Figure Charting Method download PDF the previous edition including the Governor's Island Gondola Cars project, the built Valencia Opera House, the Turning torso skyscraper in Sweden, and the TVT Station in Liege, Belgium; as well as the catalog raisonne and biographical outline."

The Definitive Guide to Point and Figure: A Comprehensive Guide to the Theory and Practical Use of the Point and Figure Charting Method

Description

Point and Figure charts are one of the great secrets of the Technical Analysis world. Highly sophisticated and with a thoroughbred pedigree, they can, however, be overlooked by traders today. Jeremy du Plessis - one of the foremost Point and Figure experts in the world - returns with a fully updated second edition of this definitive guide in an effort to redress this imbalance. This second edition, with an extensive revision to the text and introduction of brand new techniques, demystifies the world of Point and Figure charting. It includes a detailed explanation of the history and development of the technique from its invention to the modern day, and covers the makeup of the chart patterns, why they are created, and how to interpret them. Throughout, readers are encouraged to understand Point and Figure charts from first principles, rather than just remember the names of a series of patterns. It is the first major work for 50 years to discuss in depth the original 1-box reversal method of Point and Figure charting and contrast it with the more popular 3-box reversal method.Further, the explanation of how to use Point and Figure charts to project targets and calculate risk-reward ratios is the most comprehensive ever seen. Also featured in the second edition are: a step-by-step analysis of the FTSE 100 Index using the 3-box method, as well as the NASDAQ Composite Index, using the 1-box method; a detailed discussion of optimising techniques; an in-depth chapter on Analysing Point and Figure charts, extensively rewritten from the first edition; a new explanation of how Point and Figure parameters are chosen and the implications of choosing them; two new Point and Figure construction methods never seen before. Point and Figure's contribution to market breadth, with a look at bullish percent and two brand new indicators; full discussion of Point and Figure gaps and how they provide valuable information about the chart; lesser known, more advanced techniques such as the use of moving averages, parabolic SAR and Bollinger Bands on Point and Figure charts; and price and volume activity histograms and how they provide information about support and resistance. All this is illustrated with numerous colour charts and observations from years of trading experience. According to du Plessis, Point and Figure charts are the 'voice of the market'. This book helps you listen to, and understand, that voice. Part of the Market Technicians Association (MTA) required reading list.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Description

Harry Potter is furious that he has been abandoned at the Dursleys' house for the summer, for he suspects that Voldemort is gathering an army, that he himself could be attacked, and that his so-called friends are keeping him in the dark. Finally rescued by wizard bodyguards, he discovers that Dumbledore is regrouping the Order of the Phoenix - a secret society first formed years ago to fight Voldemort. But the Ministry of Magic is against the Order, lies are being spread by the wizards' tabloid, the Daily Prophet, and Harry fears that he may have to take on this epic battle against evil alone. These adult editions with glorious jacket art by Andrew Davidson are now available in hardback for the first time.

'My music is the spiritual expression of what I am: my faith, my knowledge, my being...' John Coltrane rose from a hard and impoverished childhood in North Carolina to become one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time. From session musician to band member of Charlie Parker, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix download ebook pdf Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis, his raw talent and passion for experimentation inaugurated a new movement in music. Positioned at the beating heart of the 50s and 60s jazz world, Coltrane and his quartet created some of the most innovative and expressive music of the age, including the hit album My Favorite Things and the landmark work A Love Supreme. Juxtaposing scenes from Coltrane's personal life - his military career, addictions, political activism and love affairs - against snapshots of his major recordings, Coltrane evokes an extraordinary life and the momentous historical events that formed its backdrop. It is a graphic novel that echoes his work in its structure and style, and forms a testament to a pioneer and legend, whose music continues to inspire to this day.

Barbara M. Byrne: Structural Equation Modeling with AMOS: Basic Concepts, Applications, and Programming

Structural Equation Modeling with AMOS: Basic Concepts, Applications, and Programming

Description

This bestselling text provides a practical guide to structural equation modeling (SEM) using the Amos Graphical approach. Using clear, everyday language, the text is ideal for those with little to no exposure to either SEM or Amos. The author reviews SEM applications based on actual data taken from her own research. Each chapter "walks" readers through the steps involved (specification, estimation, evaluation, and post hoc modification) in testing a variety of SEM models. Accompanying each application is: an explanation of the issues addressed and a schematic presentation of hypothesized model structure; Amos input and output with interpretations; use of the Amos toolbar icons and pull-down menus; and data upon which the model application was based, together with updated references pertinent to the SEM model tested. Thoroughly updated throughout, the new edition features: * All new screen shots featuring Amos Version 23. * Descriptions and illustrations of Amos' new Tables View format which enables the specification of a structural model in spreadsheet form. * Key concepts and/or techniques that introduce each chapter. * Alternative approaches to model analyses when enabled by Amos thereby allowing users to determine the method best suited to their data. * Provides analysis of the same model based on continuous and categorical data (Ch. 5) thereby enabling readers to observe two ways of specifying and testing the same model as well as compare results. * All applications based on the Amos graphical mode interface accompanied by more "how to" coverage of graphical techniques unique to Amos. * More explanation of key procedures and analyses that address questions posed by readers * All application data files are available at www.routledge.com/9781138797031. The two introductory chapters in Section 1 review the fundamental concepts of SEM methodology and a general overview of the Amos program. Section 2 provides single-group analyses applications including two first-order confirmatory factor analytic (CFA) models, one second-order CFA model, and one full latent variable model. Section 3 presents multiple-group analyses applications with two rooted in the analysis of covariance structures and one in the analysis of mean and covariance structures. Two models that are increasingly popular with SEM practitioners, construct validity and testing change over time using the latent growth curve, are presented in Section 4. The book concludes with a review of the use of bootstrapping to address non-normal data and a review of missing (or incomplete) data in Section 5. An ideal supplement for graduate level courses in psychology, education, business, and social and health sciences that cover the fundamentals of SEM with a focus on Amos, this practical text continues to be a favorite of both researchers and practitioners. A prerequisite of basic statistics through regression analysis is recommended but no exposure to either SEM or Amos is required.

Lydia Davis: Break It Down

Break It Down

Description

The thirty-four stories in this seminal collection powerfully display what have become Lydia Davis's trademarks dexterity, brevity, understatement, and surprise. Although the certainty of her prose suggests a world of almost clinical reason and clarity, her characters show us that life, thought, and language are full of disorder. "Break It Down "is Davis at her best. In the words of Jonathan Franzen, she is "a magician of self-consciousness.""

Lili St. Crow: Betrayals: A Strange Angels Novel

Betrayals: A Strange Angels Novel

Description

The second novel in the Strange Angels series picks up with Dru neatly tucked away in a Schola that's more like a prison than a secret training facility. Except for one tiny detail ...she's the only girl in the place and is totally surrounded by tons of cute boys. But a traitor in the Order wants Dru dead and she can't trust anyone except for Graves. Too bad he's being kept busy with a new crew of wulfen teens and doesn't have time for her. As she learns the truth about who she can and can't trust, Dru's only hope may be to save herself - although the one gift that makes her special is draining away, and she doesn't know how to get it back. Will Dru survive long enough to find out who is really after her? Or is she destined for the same fate as her murdered parents? Lili's characters come alive on the page in a way that's visually stunning and she creates the same terrific pace, danger and teen romance as in Strange Angels.

On 20 May 2006, Anthony Foley held aloft the European Cup for Munster and cemented his position as a legend of Irish rugby. With a father who played for Munster and Ireland - and who was a member of the team that conquered the All Blacks - it was no surprise that the young Anthony took to the game and he has shone on every team he has played for - from the St Munchin's Junior Cup team to the Irish national side. He was part of the Shannon side that dominated the 1990s, winning four All-Ireland league titles in a row and playing in all forty-eight games in that amazing record. In a memorable debut for Ireland, he scored a try against England in 1995 and went on to gain over sixty caps and captain his country. But it is with Munster - his true band of brothers Betrayals: A Strange Angels Novel free epub - that Foley is most identified. He is the province's most capped player, holds the record for the most tries in all competitions and led them to glory in Europe. In Axel, he looks back at a career of dizzying highs and sickening lows, at Ireland's often painful progression into the professional era and lets us in on what makes one of the last, great amateur players tick.
